Friendly Fire: How Cybersecurity Management is Hurting Us and What We Can Do to Fix It

Chris Cronin, Principal Consultant, Halock

Information security has always been a fight against the hackers. But it has also become a fight among friendly parties. “Third Party Risk Assessments” have become an increasing head-ache for companies and their service providers. New, challenging cybersecurity frameworks are being introduced that companies are rushing to implement. Cyber insurance is struggling to make sense of the market place, and in 2015 the courts and the FTC each found hundreds of millions of dollars in liability against companies with failed security, but who had security certifications.

This presentation will discuss the many ways organizations are hurting each other with cybersecurity “friendly fire.” We will describe the underlying causes of friendly fire, and will demonstrate the simple guidance that the federal government has provided us to smooth things out and to get back to the task of securing information.
